I know that at least Lauri will love this topic! LOL

The left back talks about his passion for surfing in an interview to Hala Madrid

Real Madrid's official magazine, Hala Madrid, has published an interview with Míchel Salgado in their 21st issue in which the right back talks about his passion for surfing. The interview is part of the "Football Off Limits" series the magazine has been publishing. Salgado also talks about other passions of his, such as cars and horses.

He shellfishes, surfs, loves horses and cars... His restless character prevents him from vedging on the sofa and incites him to live new experiences every day. "I'm rather restless, I have a strong personality and I'm a good friend to my friends." This is how Salgado describes himself. The right back also defines himself as a person close to his roots, adding, "Whenever I see the Vigo estuary I feel something strong and powerful grow inside me." His motto is to "live the best way you can without treading on anybody else."

How is Míchel Salgado off the football pitch?
Others should answer that question, but since it's my turn, I'll say I'm a normal person. I'm becoming more of a family man since I have two children. I like to do various things, like travelling, going to the cinema, listen to music... I must say I have a strong personality, so I sometimes get angry with ease, but I'm also a very good friend to my friends.

What would you take with you to a desert island?
I would take my family, my friends and a surf board. I don't really need much more than that.

So, you have a passion for surfing...
Yes. Besides riding the peak of the wave, which is the hardest thing to do in surf, what I most enjoy is the time I spend waiting for a wave to come. I feel free as I wait in the middle of the sea. It seems the sea speaks to you in some way. While you wait for the best wave to arrive you enjoy yourself by relaxing as you lie on the board... Those of us who have been born close to the sea know this feeling.

In other words, there is chemistry between you and the sea.
The sea calls to me. Besides my family, it's what I most miss. I miss not having it close. When I manage to ride a small wave -and I say small wave because I'm still learning how to surf- I feel a sudden adrenaline rush.

Where would you prefer to ride waves?
In many places: Hawaii, the Faulklands, Australia, South Africa... I'd like to go to the Faulklands and other places where there are waves for those of us who are middle stage surfers. I don't have enough time to try to become a great surfer (laughs).

You just talked about your passion for the sea. Are you a true son of the Vigo estuary also in spirit?
Talking about the Vigo estuary is talking about something essential to all of us who have been born there. It makes the city incredibly beautiful. It's fantastic to wake up in the morning, get a boat and sail to the Cies Islands, Barra Beach, the Island of Ons... I travel with Vigo on my mind, and when I see it I feel something very special. I miss it very much.

Have you shellfished there?
Of course I have. When I was a child I fished goose barnacles and muscles. We only fished a few goose barnacles, those which were very easy to fish. Those who fish proper ones for a living risk their lives every day because they can only be found on the rocks on which waves break. It's a tough job. Nevertheless, me and my family fished the apetizers whenever we went for a picnic.

There's nothing like good seafood, right?
Aah! There's nothing like good seafood! To eat a good spider crab is a true treat. The key to cooking it well is to boil it properly. The same applies to goose barnacles. They are uneadable if too soft or overcooked. The right amount of salt is also important.

Surf, cars, horses... Is it fair to say you like to live life to the fullest?
I like to live intensely. I believe you can learn many new things from every culture, place or moment. I always try to see and experience new things; that's what really interests me. We can do so much beyond what our environment and surroundings have to offer. This way, you discover many new things, or you look at things differently once you've tried or learnt about them, and you enjoy them immensely. For example, I recently didn't know anything about surf, but I now know -and experience- the incredible vibe amongst surfers. I love to travel and learn about how other people think and why they think what we like is wrong and vice-versa. I love to discover new things.

Moving on, how do you choose a car?
Your tastes change as you grow older. At first I liked fast sports cars, but now I look for more elegant and comfortable sports cars. Having a good car is a spoiled treat for those of us who have a passion for them. We enjoy cars because we know it's a privilege to be able to own a good one. The car becomes somethting important in our lives and we care for it a lot.

Let's talk about horses. What does a horse represent for you?
A horse embodies beauty and elegance. It's one of the most beautiful animals on Earth. The world of horses is fascinating. I've been part of it very little, but I've been lucky enough to be the owner of a winning mare from the very first day! What luck! Horses give me a sense of power. It's impressive to watch them galop.

Looking back, what would you have liked to do if you hadn't become a football player?
You can never tell because these thoughts are always influenced by one's personal financial situation. I guess I would have finished my business degree and would have a job like that of my friends' in Vigo. I think I would have been equally restless and that I would have had more time to surf (laughs). At the end of a hard day's work, I would go to the beach with my family and friends. The great thing about Vigo is that, as it is a small city, you can easily disconnect from everything surrounding your job. I'm sure I would have also been happy with a life like that.

What's your favourite book?
La fiesta del chivo by Mario Vargas Llosa. It's about the life of former Dominican Republic dictator Trujillo. It had a great impact on me.

What music do you like to listen to in order to disconnect from the world?
I like anything from heavy metal to classical music. I guess that for an escapist moment I would listen to Manolo García. U2 are one of my favourite international bands. I've been meeting members from La Oreja De Van Gogh, Pereza and Dover recently, which has brought me closer to their music.

Which is the worst of all your vices?
It used to be my passion for cars, but it has been dying of late. I don't know... I guess it would have to be those days I spend on my small boat... My real vice is my love for my life. It's wonderful.

What historical moment would you like to have witnessed?
I would have liked to live the fall of the Roman Empire. I love literature concerning the Romans. I think they represent 80 percent of our culture. Everything they did and invented amazes me; they were very intelligent. I would like to know exactly why their empire ended.

What's your motto?
"Live and let live," or better said, "live the best way you can without treading on anybody else." The most important thing in life is having respect for everybody else. That's the best motto.
