MADRID (Reuters) - Sevilla midfielder Antonio Puerta died on Tuesday, three days after collapsing during a Primera Liga match against Getafe.

The 22-year-old Spanish international had been in a critical state in the Virgen del Rocio hospital in Seville since being admitted on Saturday. The hospital confirmed his death.

Spanish media said UEFA had agreed to postpone Tuesday's Champions League third round qualifier against AEK Athens and that the team's league match against Osasuna on Monday would also be called off.

An AEK spokesman said the tie will be played on Monday September 3.

Puerta collapsed after jogging back towards his own goal 35 minutes into the match against Getafe.

Team mates and medical staff rushed to his side and were seen preventing him from swallowing his tongue as he lost consciousness.

He was able to walk from the pitch but doctors said that he collapsed again in the changing rooms and had to be given cardiac resuscitation before being taken to hospital.

rest in peace.

I was so hoping he would survive and get better..shit.
I hope his wife gets over this and the child will be healthy and everything..
It must be so hard for her, losing her husband at that age just before the birth. I really wish her all the best and lots of mental strength, and of course also for the rest of the family..
Rest in Peace Antonio.

I just don't hope the same is going to start as in 2004 again. It's hardly understandable how such things can happen..even more after all the thorough examinations, and as the season has just started. Lots of remaining open questions Confused

Don't know what to say, it's shocking. What's more sad, is that nobody recognised he had a problem before. It's terrible.
I really wish all the best to the family...
May he rest in peace.

This is really really horrible, and sad. He was only 22 years old. I didnt know much about him, but it really gets into me when a player dies.

Rest in peace Antonio Puerta.

I was away when this happened, but of course it was all over the news. This is really shocking and I don´t know how it must feel for the family and the teammates. Its just so ... hard to understand. So many young players die doing what they love the most... kicking a ball around.

As others said before me, it makes you think about the important things. May he rest in peace
